The Civil Engineering department offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in civil engineering. Our goal is to produce graduates who are schooled in fundamentals and capable of doing advanced engineering work.

Major areas of concentration for this program are: construction engineering and management, environmental engineering and water resource management, solid mechanics, structural engineering, transportation engineering, civil engineering materials, and systems engineering.

The available courses include laboratory studies, applied mathematics, engineering analysis, engineering design, and a variety of introductory and advanced level courses in various areas of applied science and engineering management.

Master's Degree Options

The Department of Civil Engineering offers two graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Civil Engineering (M.S.):

  1. Professional Master's Program - for recent graduates and practicing engineers interested in specialized areas to enhance their careers. Master's thesis is optional.
  2. Master's Program (pre-doctoral) - for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. Master's thesis is required.

The M.S. (thesis-option) and M.S. (coursework-only) degrees both contain at least 30 credit hours.

Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to the M.S. degree program is a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university. The minimum requirement for admission to the master's degree program of a particular department is an undergraduate degree from an accredited engineering program. Additional requirements may apply based on undergraduate performance.

The minimum GPA required from regular admission to master's degree programs is 3.0 for bachelor level courses. Provisional admission can be granted to students with a GPA less than 3.0. Provisional admission will be converted to regular admission after the student passes a set of approved graduate level courses with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Important information

The Department of Civil Engineering requests TOEFL (for non-native English speakers) test results for application to graduate studies for the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. A GRE score is required for all Ph.D. applicants.

To be eligible for competitive stipends, Catholic University has set an eligibility requirement of 1300 points (or equivalent in the new point system) for the GRE.
