Flu Season 2013 -- Message #5

The Incident Management Team (IMT), led by Dr. Loretta Staudt, medical director, Student Health Services, met on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, to discuss the status of flu reports on campus and in the District of Columbia. IMT reviewed the latest Influenza Surveillance Report from the District of Columbia’s Department of Health, which states there is no increase of cases of influenza in the District. There has been no increase of cases of influenza on campus. At this time, the IMT will only convene if it becomes necessary due to any increase of influenza cases on campus.

The University will continue enhanced touch-point wipe-downs throughout the campus, keeping all hand sanitizers and soap dispensers full, and will continue to post information on proper hand-washing in the restrooms. Stand-alone hand sanitizers will remain in heavily populated areas.

According to the CDC website, people who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (very tired)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (these are more common in children than adults).

The following preventive measures are recommended for avoiding various types of influenza:

  • Cover nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of any tissue immediately after use.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water and/or use alcohol-based hands cleaners.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick, stay away from class or workplace.
  • Contact Student Health Services or your health-care provider if you have symptoms.

Flu Season 2013 -- Message #3

The Incident Management Team (IMT), led by Dr. Loretta Staudt, medical director, Student Health Services, met on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, to discuss the status of flu reports on campus and in the District of Columbia. IMT reviewed the Influenza Surveillance Report from the District of Columbia’s Department of Health, which states there is an increase of cases of influenza in the District of Columbia. However, there has not been any increase of cases on campus. Student Health Services does not have any flu vaccines to administer and has been advised by its supplier that it will not receive any additional vaccine. Therefore, students who wish to receive a vaccine are highly encouraged to seek alternative sources elsewhere, e.g. pharmacies, doctors’ offices, participating grocery stores, and CVS stores.

The University will continue enhanced touch-point wipe-downs throughout the campus, keeping all hand sanitizers and soap dispensers full, and will continue to post information on proper hand-washing in the restrooms. Stand-alone hand sanitizers have been added to heavily populated areas.

Flu Season 2013 -- Message #1

Consistent with The Catholic University of America’s Emergency Plan, the Incident Management Team (IMT) met on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, to discuss the status of flu reports in the United States. The team is headed by Dr. Loretta Staudt, medical director, Student Health Services, and includes administrators from the offices of public safety and environmental health and safety.

Members of the IMT have been monitoring the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website for updates on the 2012-2013 influenza season. The CDC is recommending the influenza vaccination (flu shot) for people who have not yet been vaccinated this season. The University is also following its recommendations to take proactive steps to prevent and prepare for instances of the flu.

Those steps include performing enhanced touch-point wipe-downs throughout the campus and double-checking all hand sanitizers and soap dispensers to ensure they are full and properly working and that information on proper hand-washing is posted in the restrooms. As necessary, stand-alone hand sanitizers will be added to heavily populated areas.

According to the CDC website, people who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches

Update on Campus Security

The following message was sent by Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Jon Sawyer to undergraduate and graduate students on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Dear Students,

The University has recently expanded the way we notify the campus community of crimes occurring on the campus or within the local community. In addition to continuing our past practice of posting crime and information alerts in campus buildings, Public Affairs will be sending these alerts via email. It is our hope that this will allow all members of the campus community to have more timely notification of incidents to prevent similar crimes and to allow for us all to take appropriate precautions to minimize our potential to be a crime victim.

In response to the recent increase in crimes reported in the area of the campus, we are coordinating efforts with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and Metro Transit Police to increase police visibility.

The Department of Public Safety will continue its enhanced patrol initiative, which consists of high-visibility foot patrols along city streets that border the campus. In addition, we offer several risk reduction services. These services include 131 emergency telephones that are strategically located throughout the campus. These phones help the CUA community communicate an emergency to campus police. One of the most requested services used by students, faculty, and staff is the escort service. Escort services are provided by public safety officers who are members of the foot, vehicle, or bicycle patrol. Bus service is provided throughout campus for students, faculty, and staff. This shuttle service operates daily, covering both the interior and exterior areas around campus. We will continue to utilize the services of private security patrols along John McCormack Road during the evening and nighttime hours. The campus is monitored by a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system, which provides the public safety department with visual coverage of the campus.

Security of the residence halls is supported via the Public Safety Assistants (PSA) program, which is one of the public safety department’s crime prevention services. PSAs are not public safety officers or security guards. They are part-time employees who are deployed to residence halls and provide an extra set of eyes and ears to the public safety officers. Each of these risk reduction services is a proactive measure that supports the safety and well-being of our campus community.

We have recently revised the Campus Safety (http://www.cua.edu/safety/) main page, which is a source of important safety and wellness information. I would encourage you to become familiar with this site as it is updated on a regular basis.

Sincerely,
Dean Sawyer

CUA to Participate in Earthquake Drill Thursday, Oct. 18

Now that today’s drill is over, Catholic University is preparing for the next one — an earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10:18 a.m. CUA is participating in the second drill as part of the Great Southeast ShakeOut, so members of the CUA community can practice the best way to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake — drop, cover, and hold on.

The University will not send text alerts, emails, or phone messages notifying CUA community members of the start and end of the one-minute voluntary drill, but they are strongly encouraged to participate.

The University is participating in the drill in the wake of the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the Washington, D.C., area in August 2011. The Department of Public Safety urges them to read the instructions for both scenarios as well as other procedures the University follows in the event of an emergency at http://publicsafety.cua.edu/emergency/index.cfm.

Those who are not registered to receive text alerts on their mobile devices may register prior to the drill. To register for alerts, visit the “Alert DC” home page at https://textalert.ema.dc.gov and create an account (click the New User link near the bottom of the page). Make sure to select The Catholic University of America under the Colleges/Universities alert option.

Catholic University Urges Precautions to Prevent Norovirus

The D.C. Department of Health has determined that a recent outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on the George Washington University campus is due to norovirus. This virus is highly infectious and can be spread from person to person. Catholic University’s Incident Management Team reminds all members of the CUA community to be vigilant about hand washing, to not share eating utensils, and to refrain from group activities, if they are ill.

The University’s custodial services have increased the cleaning of touch points and the placement of hand sanitizers around campus. For more information about norovirus, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Members of the CUA community who develop symptoms of nausea and vomiting should visit the Student Health Services website for more information. Students who are ill should call 202-319-5744 to make an appointment.

If you are experiencing extreme dizziness, lightheadedness, increased abdominal pain, or blood in your vomit, you may need to be seen in a hospital emergency room. When Student Health Services is closed, a physician is always available by phone at 202-269-7000 for consultation. The University recommends calling the after-hours physician before heading to the hospital. An operator will take your information and have the doctor call you.
