Cardinal Service Commitment Award
Outstanding Undergraduate Student – Delaney Brooks
Delaney Brooks, a first-year double major in theology and philosophy, received an undergraduate student Cardinal Service Commitment Award. The award was presented by The Catholic University of America on April 10, 2012, in celebration of the University's 125th anniversary.
Brooks contributed 834 hours of service to the anniversary initiative. Her volunteer service included a summer experience as a full-time Regnum Christi missionary in Houston working in faith and virtue formation programs in grade schools, high schools, and local parishes by leading retreats, teaching religious education, and coordinating various service trips. She also participated in the Freshman Day of Service, homeless food runs, pro-life hospitality, and packing food for starving children.
"I am very interested in the development of young men and women," Brooks said. "I am very thankful for all I have received and the different service opportunities have enabled me to share my gifts with others and to help them to develop into the person God intends for them to become."
During this academic year, Brooks has been volunteering with the Regnum Christi Mission Network program Pure Fashion. It is a modesty modeling program for girls in high school. She is a team leader for a group of junior girls. The program consists of nine monthly formation meetings and culminates in a fashion show on April 22.
"Often there are many external influences that can lead young people astray," Brooks said. "Love and personal attention is lacking in our society and it is during those years that positive influences are extremely important. To be the source of loving support is a beautiful part of my life and I enjoy it immensely."
Brooks, of Manhattan, Ill., said she was attracted to Catholic University as a place to grow in her faith.
"CUA is the perfect combination of a faithful community, a great education that remains true to the Catholic Church, and in an ideal location," she said.
