Service: “On Oct. 2, I helped manage “Who Runs the D.M.V? (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia),” a basketball tournament for charity. There were 10 teams participating from seven D.C.-area schools — Catholic, George Mason, George Washington, Georgetown, American, the University of Maryland, and the University of the District of Columbia. They each paid to enter the tournament. As the treasurer of the project, I selected Hope and a Home, a D.C. charity that uses one-on-one coaching and peer support to build aspirations towards higher education in minority communities.”
Where: Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center
Why: “The inspiration for this event was to bring unity among the D.C. metro-area schools in a competitive basketball game for charity. We invited young students from local communities to join the crowd and pick their favorite team, and cheer for them. I believe the children saw the idea of college as possible, especially for minorities. The diversity among the students and crowd who were playing was really beautiful.”
